Disaster Management

We will begin this forum by looking into the definition of the terms that revolve around disaster management. So! What is disaster management? According to me it is extremely similar to the management is learned in my undergraduate major, I define it as the systematic and principled science that is aimed at proactively on reduction of negative consequences of adverse events.

According to the International federation of the Red Cross it is “the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters”. I like this definition since it brings the humanity that disaster management should be centered on.

The next term I would like to look at is what a hazard is. A hazard is the probability of a threatening event that could be man made or naturally caused within a given period or area with negative consequences. Hazards can lead to events or situations that if not given urgent and immediate attention they can lead to emergencies.

On the next post we will look at the definition of emergency, disaster, risk and vulnerability so if you get a chance look into them and contribute in the comment section.
